If you’re looking for a slice of heaven, you’ll find it in Queen Charlotte Sound, New Zealand. Nestled between rolling hills and the turquoise waters of the Marlborough Sounds, Queen Charlotte Sound is a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike. I recently had the pleasure of staying at Furneaux Lodge and Punga Cove, two idyllic lodges located on the shores of the sound, and I have to say, it was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life.
The first thing that struck me about Furneaux Lodge and Punga Cove was their tranquil beauty. The lodges are nestled among native bush and offer breathtaking views of the sound. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and I immediately felt at home. I spent my days exploring the stunning scenery of the Marlborough Sounds, from the lush forests to the sparkling water. One of the highlights of my trip was walking a small part of the Queen Charlotte Track, a 71-kilometre trail that winds through the sound’s hills and valleys.
Both lodges offer a range of activities, from kayaking and paddle boarding to simply relaxing on the beach. I particularly enjoyed dining on the fresh local seafood and sampling the wines from nearby vineyards.
The absolute highlight of my trip, however, was seeing bioluminescence in the water. This natural phenomenon occurs when tiny plankton in the water light up in response to movement, and it was truly magical to see the water shimmering with light as I moved through the water. Heavenly!
