The Flaschen family, travelling with their adult children from Boston Massachusetts, were thrilled to finally tick New Zealand off their bucket list.
Their two week fun-filled tour around the South Island included many activities such as Underground Adventures on the West Coast. Clad in wetsuits & mining helmets they floated on rubber tubes down river and through caves, to see glow worms in their natural state.
Other experiences the family enjoyed were a helicopter landing on Franz Josef Glacier, an overnight cruise on Doubtful Sound, jet boating on the Shotover River, taking an historic steamboat to Walter Peak Station for a farm tour, star-gazing, wine & cheese tasting and plenty of walks in nature.
One highlight was a visit to Hook in Wanaka where a family member caught four salmon; some became Sashimi while the rest was smoked for our lunch. Really delicious & highly recommend giving this place a go.
The autumnal weather was a mixed bag of sunshine, cooler days, heavy rain and some unseasonable snow. But this did not dampen spirits or deter the family who were determined to make the most of it. Soaking in wood fired hot tubs were the perfect antidote to the inclement weather.
All in all everyone had a grand time. So good in fact that when the kids left, Mom & Dad stayed on to experience the North Island on their own doing a self-drive tour to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
